If you've stored your water filter according to the recommended guidelines, then yes, it should be ready for use. However, to ensure full protection, it’s important to take a few precautionary steps before heading out.
Perform an Integrity Test
You should perform an integrity test:
- Annually
- After any impact (e.g., dropping the filter)
- After freezing
- Any time you suspect potential damage
A successful integrity test confirms that your filter is still functioning properly and providing the level of protection it was designed for
Sterilize Before Use
If your system has been sitting unused for a while, even if it passes the integrity test, it’s a good idea to sterilize the entire system (including bags, hoses, and filter body):
- Mix 1 teaspoon of household bleach with 2 liters of water.
- Pump or run the solution through your entire system.
- Let it sit for at least 20 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
This helps eliminate any microbial growth that may have developed during storage.
Check Purification Tablets
If you use AquaTabs® or similar purification tablets:
- Check the expiration date printed on the package.
- Replace any expired tablets to ensure effective water treatment.
