When reviewing our warranty policies, you may see the term "useful life." It's entirely understandable to seek some clarification on this term!
Put simply, "useful life" refers to the period during which a product can be safely and effectively used for its intended purpose.
Please Note: "Useful Life" does not refer to your lifetime as the owner.
Because every product is used differently, there isn't a single calendar date that applies to every item. A product used occasionally and stored carefully may remain in service much longer than the same product used heavily in demanding conditions.
Why Don't We Use a Fixed Number of Years for Certain Products?
The lifespan of outdoor equipment can vary significantly depending on factors such as:
- How often the product is used
- The environments it is exposed to
- How it is cleaned, maintained, and stored
- Normal wear and tear over time
- Exposure to sunlight, moisture, chemicals, abrasion, and other elements
For that reason, a fixed lifespan would not accurately reflect how long a particular product remains safe and functional.
What Happens Over Time?
All products experience wear as they are used. Fabrics, coatings, plastics, metals, foam, and other materials naturally age over time.
As wear accumulates, a product may eventually reach a point where it can no longer perform as intended or can no longer be used safely. When that point is reached, the product has reached the end of its useful life.
What Does This Mean for Warranty Coverage?
Our warranty applies to defects in materials and workmanship during a product's useful life.
A product that has simply worn out through normal use, aging, environmental exposure, or extended service is generally not considered defective. Instead, it has reached the end of its useful life.
How Can I Help My Product Last Longer?
While all products eventually wear out, proper care can help maximize their lifespan:
- Follow the care and maintenance instructions provided with your product
- Clean and dry products before long-term storage
- Store products in a cool, dry location away from prolonged UV exposure
- Inspect products regularly for signs of wear or damage
- Replace products that no longer function safely or as intended
If you're unsure whether a product has reached the end of its useful life, our team is always happy to help evaluate the situation.
