For years MSR has been working hard to eliminate flame retardants where possible and reduce them where their use is required by regulation. We work closely with our supply chain, other tent companies, the outdoor industry association and government regulatory bodies to make our products as safe as possible. In our tents that require flame retardants, we apply these compounds at the lowest possible concentration that will allow the fabrics to pass the required regulation, and the compounds we do use are bluesign approved.
A few years ago MSR and other tent companies worked closely with Duke University to study this issue. Here is a link to the study - https://www.msrgear.com/blog/msr-participates-in-duke-university-study-on-flame-retardants-in-tents/. If you look closely at the study it states 75% of one’s exposure to flame retardant compounds are from household dust. Carpets, drapes furniture can be treated with flame retardants. The Duke study show that one’s exposure from a camping tent is around 1200 times lower than the EPA’s recommended safe daily exposure limit.
MSR take our customer’s wellbeing seriously and we strive to make the safest possible products while also meeting the required regulations for each region.
